No time to wait for Ion

A few manufacturers have confirmed that the next generation design wins that includes new Asus Eee PCs and MSI's X320 Apple Air clone are based on Intel's latest chipset codenamed Pulsbo, rather than Nvidia’s Ion. The platform uses Z series of Atom CPUs and is codenamed Menlow.

Ion design wins might come later but we were not able to confirm that any of the big names have adopted Ion. The new machines based on Poulsbo chipset, now known under US15W brand, should be available in Q2 2009 while the chipset is already launched and used by a few vendors. You can check for official details at Intel, here.

Poulsbo chipset will get Intel Atom Processor Z530 (512K Cache, 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) in uSFFBGA packaging and this will be how netbooks will look like for the rest of 2009.

In 2010 comes the Pinetrail platform that has Pineview-SC CPU and next generation Atom Netbook. Ion on the other hand comes in second half of year.
