Chip designer AMD, which is looking for a role in the post mobile world, appears to have settled on the server market as a good place to make a name for itself.
After all it only has to compete with practically everyone on the planet even its rival Nvidia is having a crack at it. Greg Poole, director of field applications engineering at AMD, told ZDNet Asia ithat making chips for desktops and laptops is its "bread and butter" business.
But this area is "largely a commodity business now" and is difficult for the company to hit the margins it wants. This is why the chipmaker will be focusing on its server-based products as these promises higher returns, Poole stated.
He said that servers was now extremely important to AMD and it was investing heavily to be successful. He said that with server processors, you're providing mission-critical applications and solving the big problems of the world so more robust and reliable solutions are needed.
