Trinity desktop, notebook and thin-and-light pictured
Three upcoming APUs line up for class photo
We managed to get a picture of AMD’s upcoming Trinity APU, a new quad-core part product that will find its place in desktops, notebooks as well as thin-and-light notebooks, or ultrathins the first half of 2012.
We asked AMD about a bit more accurate date than simply 1H 2012, but in the end we only managed to learn that it should appear by the end of Q2 2012, and Computex should look like a good date to launch this new architecture.
This is the key processor for AMD in 2012 and it should come with decent performance and good price/performance ratio. It ends up cheaper than Intel’s competing parts and it will drive down the price of ultrabooks or ultrathin notebook segment as AMD likes to call it.
The top one on the picture is a desktop part, followed by notebook part in the middle and the last on the list is the rather big part aimed at thin-and-lights. We can only suspect that it will part will end up with two cores enabled, as we cannot imagine hitting a nice clock with four cores and 17W TDP. Intel still cannot do this in 22nm so we doubt that AMD can do it with 32nm Trinity CPUs.
We’ve seen Trinity in action running notebooks with transcoding video and playing a game, and for entry level notebooks, as long as you want a quad-core, this will be a nice and affordable alternative to Intel’s offerings.
This is what they look like.
