17W CULV is about to resurrect

by on16 May 2012

In SFF form factor, ICP 847 / 807 based

After being nailed to a cross by Intel two years ago, the CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) concept could be about to make a comeback, resurrection Joe stlye.

Intel is obviously seeing a big opportunity and plans to bring at least two Celeron ULV processors for 10- to 12-inch form factors. Intel doesn’t sent a clear message as it talks about “10 to 12 inch display sized entry level PC” and later it mentions a new Chief River-based configuration to support SFF Entry PCs (10-12-inch display size) compatible with Windows 8.

So, it sounds as if we will see desktop machines as well, maybe even all-in-ones, all wrapped around the new NM70 chipset and Chief River platform. The top CPU to fit this platform whatever is ICP (Intel Celeron Processor) 847, a dual-core 1.1GHz clocked no turbo support and 2MB cache. It has DirectX 10.1 enabled graphics working at 800MHz and supports DDR 3 1066 or 1333 MHz The platform supports VGA or LVDS, 8 USB 2.0, but there is no USB 3.0 support. Four SATA 3Gb/s and one SATA 6Gb/s ports are on board.

The TDP stops at 17W and it is something called “controllable TDP” that will come with a micro code update and supports only ICP 847 and 807. In addition to the 17W max TDP the chipset consumes an additional 4.1W. The runner up Celeron 807 is also been here with us for a while and it is a single-core 1.5GHz clocked with two thread support and 950MHz graphics.

Since Chief River is a mobile platform, and it is aimed at 10-to 12-inch form factors, we would not be surprised to see someone making a CULV notebook, but only if Intel’s gives the green light. Of course, both 847 and 807 ICP processors are based on the Sandy Bridge 32nm core.
