Renesas

Quad and eight-core flavours

Renesas Mobile plans to show off two big.LITTLE chips at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month.

The MP6530 2.2 is a quad-core part with integrated LTE, but the company also has an eight-core, with four A15 and four A7 cores. However, the latter does not have a modem on board.

The quad-core MP6530 seems to be coming first and it already has some design wins. It is designed for use in mid to high-end smartphones, in the $200 to $400 range. It is designed to support multiple displays and cameras.

The GPU of choice is Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR SGX544 and the new chips will be built by TSMC, in 28nm. The A15 cores should run at up to 2GHz, while the frugal A7 cores will be clocked at 1GHz.

Phones based on the MP6530 should appear in the fourth quarter of 2013 and Renesas is already in talks with multiple OEMs.
