According to a report over at Hexus.net, it appears that AMD wants a piece of the high-end market firmly held by Intel's Extreme CPUs. It is apparently preparing a new, limited edition, Centurion FX-series CPUs that will play it own overclocking card.
Despite the fact that AMD usually holds perfromance per buck crown it was nowhere near Intel's Ivy Bridge in terms of performance but still has one important card to play, the high overclockability card. According to the latest rumors, AMD wants to launch a new, limited edition CPU, codename Centurion, that will feature high 5GHz clock scpeeds and should be able to cope with Intel's high-end Core i7 CPUs.
While reaching 5.0GHz is actually not that hard, even on the FX-8350 flagship, the Centurion promises those exact frequencies and stability even on air-cooling. According to rumors, the Centurion FX-Series chip should be priced at US $795 which puts it in direct price competition with Intel's LGA2011 high-end offer.
Although it might not be able to rock Intel's high-end boat, the Centurion will at least be able to bring some more attention to the FX-Series brand and offer higher performance and better overclockability. AMD already did a similar thing before with Phenom II TWKR chip back in 2009 and this might be the similar move.
