AMD confirms Kaveri delay, sort of

Hitting channel in February 2014

The first FM2+ boards are starting to appear and one may expect that the chips are on the way too, but now it appears Kaveri won’t be available this year after all.

Kaveri was originally scheduled for the second half of the year, which usually means Q4 or late Q4. AMD now says the chip is on track to ship towards the end of the year, but VR-Zone reports that the actual products won’t hit the channel this year. They are coming in mid-February.

“AMD’s ‘Kaveri’ high-performance APU remains on track and will start shipping to customers in Q4 2013, with first public availability in the desktop component channel very early in Q1 2014,” the company told VR-Zone.

Mobile Kaveri products should be available later in the first half of 2014.

Looking at AMD’s roadmap, it is clear that Kaveri was supposed to appear a couple of months behind Kabini. Even the Kabini rollout is proving exceptionally slow and there’s practically no Kabini products on store shelves yet, despite the fact that it was officially launched in late May.

The news comes as no surprise. It was obvious that a potential Kaveri launch in Q4 would give Richland a very short shelf life and most pundits didn’t expect it to appear this year anyway. However, Kabini’s slow rollout is much more frustrating. Jaguar is the most exciting thing AMD has to offer at this point and the low-end is practically the only market segment where AMD can steal Intel’s lunch money, but with each week its window of opportunity is getting smaller and smaller.
