Intel creates skunk works for connected gadgets

by on06 November 2013

Internet of things, wearable nonsense

Intel has created a new business division to address emerging markets, namely the internet of things and wearables.

The group’s general manager is Doug Davis and he will report directly to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich. Davis told Reuters that Krzanich wants a higher level of focus on such products.

Although it doesn’t appear to be a huge step, it does indicate that Krzanich is serious about shifting focus to mobile and future tech trends. Earlier this year Krzanich and Intel President Renee James made it clear that Intel would start taking Atom parts more seriously. Intel recently released the ultra-low-power Quark processor, so a new division for wearable gadgets and the internet of things should come as no surprise.

Of course, it will be a while before we can actually see what Intel has in mind in the form of actual products and platforms.
