Mediatek to outpace Qualcomm next year?

by on13 December 2013

In market share at least

MediaTek had a very good year and 2014 is looking even more promising. The company is successfully tackling several market segments at once.

In the low to mid-range it has a number of Cortex A7 SoCs, including the octa-core MT6592, which has already scored numerous design wins. In the mid- to high-end it has A12 and A15 parts in the pipeline and it is also doubling the number of tablet-centric SoCs set to launch next year.

According to Digitimes Research, MediaTek could see its market share grow to 26.2 percent next year, passing Qualcomm as the biggest application processor supplier in the world. Qualcomm’s market share is estimated at 25.6 percent.

However, it should be noted that Qualcomm’s average selling prices are much higher, as the bulk of MediaTek’s revenues comes from cheap devices, while Qulacomm’s Snapdragons power the vast majority of high-end Android phones on the market, including the Nexus 5, HTC One, some versions of the Galaxy S4 and numerous phones from LG, Sony and other vendors.

In contrast, MediaTek plans to focus on cheap white-box tablets and mid range phones next year. Qualcomm will stay committed to the high-end market, although it already has plenty of cheaper SoCs with LTE support.

MediaTek is expected to roll out its first LTE enabled chips next year, along with some smaller vendors like Nvidia.
