Based on the 12nm manufacturing process, Ryzen+ will bring some improvements in terms of higher frequency as well as the new Precision Boost technology. While it is not clear if the 2nd generation of Ryzen CPUs will cover the entire lineup, AMD did note that we will see it on Ryzen desktop CPUs, Ryzen Pro CPUs as well as the 2nd generation Threadripper CPUs, which should be coming in the second half of the year.

AMD will also launch the new 400-series chipset with the 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs and the company has now confirmed that it will support both the 1st generation Ryzen CPUs, 2nd generation, new Ryzen desktop APUs with Radeon Graphics as well as the 7th generation AMD APUs. The existing X370 series motherboards is likely to support the 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs with BIOS updates from motherboard manufacturers but it is still not clear if there will be any performance benefits from the new 400-series chipsets.

The new 400 series chipset, according to AMD, will be optimized for 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs, bring lower power and probably improve memory performance, offering support for higher clocked memory.

AMD is definitely strengthening its Ryzen lineup and the 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs should help AMD to keep the momentum until Zen 2 launches on the 7nm manufacturing process.
