Sales guys inside big companies are sometimes like rock stars and it seems that AMD cannot keep them happy. Matthew Zielinski is the latest big departure and his new title is the President of North America and Senior Vice president of PCs and Smart Devices. That sounds like a very senior position. We also heard that at least one more senior chap decamped to Lenovo sales as well.
AMD increased its market share with Ryzen, but this is not enough to feed the whole company. Graphics sales went to currency miners as they were big and easy customers.
We see a trend of high profile sales guys from AMD going to partners, as there is more to sell, more diversity, and definitely more chance to grow. The more you grow, the better your bonus.
Raja Koduri went to Intel in a serious position too. It is hard to say "no" to a Systems and Graphics Architect, Senior Vice President and General manager at a $232 billion dollar company.
John Byrne grew inside Dell to have a very senior position within a year to 18 months, and guys like him or Zielinski are good at what they do. While this is not so great news for AMD, it is definitely great news for Lenovo. Lenovo learned its lesson by hiring David Roman, who currently works as Chief Marketing Officer. David - who we meet at Nvidia - was VP of worldwide advertising at Apple, VP of corporate and international marketing at Nvidia, and was at HP for five years, before going to Lenovo.
Sometimes, it is all about the right people calling the right shots and since most of the companies that ex. AMD chaps go to have bigger budgets, these guys tend to do really well.
