A total of nine SKUs and coming with improved NPU performance

At its recent Advancing AI event in San Jose, AMD announced its new Ryzen 8040 series mobile processors, promising an increase in generative AI workloads.

It has announced a total of nine SKUs, most of which feature improved NPU performance and cover different TDP ranges, from 35 to 54W, all the way down to 15W to 35W TDP range. The Ryzen 8040 Hawk Point is pretty much a 7040 series Phoenix refresh, with slightly improved clocks, and higher NPU performance. Speaking of which, AMD claims up to a 40 percent increase in NPU performance in certain loads.

The new Ryzen 8040 series mobile processors lineup features nine SKUs, all boasting minor CPU clock speed bumps compared to their Ryzen 7040 series predecessors. Seven of these SKUs feature the "improved" NPU topping at 16 TOPS, and only two of the U-series SKUs will lack the integrated NPU. The lead is taken by the Ryzen 9 8945HS with an 8-core/16-thread CPU reaching 5.2GHz, followed closely by the Ryzen 7 8845HS at 5.1GHz. Both offer configurable TDP from 35 W to 54 W. The Ryzen 7 8840U, designed for ultraportables, maintains a 5.1GHz max boost with a 20 W to 30 W TDP.

The flagship 8945HS and all Ryzen 7 SKUs feature the fully unleashed Radeon 780M iGPU, while other SKUs stick to the Radeon 740M iGPU. In the Ryzen 5 series, the Ryzen 5 8645HS leads with a 6-core/12-thread CPU at 5.0GHz. The Ryzen 5 8640HS operates at a slightly slower 4.90 GHz max boost, both with configurable TDP. For ultraportables, the Ryzen 5 8640U boasts a 4.9GHz max boost frequency.

At the bottom are the Ryzen 5 8540U and Ryzen 3 8440U, lacking the Ryzen AI NPU. Both feature the scaled-down Radeon 740M iGPU, a 6-core/12-thread CPU at 4.9GHz for the 8540U, and a 4-core/8-thread CPU at 4.7GHz for the 8440U, with a 15 W to 30 W TDP range.

While we do not have a specific launch date other than Q1 2024 AMD has announced, Acer is one of the first partners that has already announced its own Nitro V 16 gaming laptop powered by Ryzen 8040 series processors and combined with Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. Acer says this one will be available in March 2024 in the US, and April 2024 in the EMEA region, starting at $999.99 and €1,199, respectively.
