Sony to delay firmware update till October
Sony has announced that they will be delaying the release on a firmware update that will upgrade the PlayStation 3 to support Blu-ray movies in 3D. The update was supposed to drop in September, but according to sources Sony will be pushing the 3D update for the PlayStation 3 until October.

No specifics have been given as to why Sony is delaying the update, but after the first update enabling 3D Blu-ray playback comes, it is expected to open the floodgates for Sony on a number of other things that will support 3D rendering, as well (including 3D YouTube videos and PlayTV broadcasts, for example). It is expected that the 3D update will also be compatible with the add-on HDTV/DVR device that Sony offers for the PlayStation 3 in some regions.

Sony has a number of 3D games and movie titles headed for the platform. A number of Sony-owned titles will be re-released as 3D Blu-ray titles in the near future. It is thought that Sony’s hard push of 3D support on the PlayStation 3 could energize the 3D market space, but the lack of 3D content is apparently one of several major reasons that have been slowing the adoption rate.
