Will spend a $100 million
Search engine outfit Google is spending $100 million to improve its YouTube site. The plan is to populate the site with its own low-budget original programmes, made specifically for the web.

According to the Wall Street Journal the site will commission low-cost content designed exclusively for the web. The plan is to have a set of "channels" around topics such as arts and sports. About 20 or so of those channels will feature several hours of professionally produced original programming a week.

It is unclear when the site will start investing in content but sources say its executives have already visited the top Hollywood talent agencies in search of ideas and will work with professional production companies to create the shows.
