The company announced that it would cut about 2,000 jobs, or 11 percent of its workforce. The move comes as no surprise to analysts, as RIM has faced serious challenges from Apple and Android devices over the past few quarters.
This is RIM’s first major job cut and the company’s workforce was going up for more than a decade. RIM did not slash jobs even at the peak of the 2008 economic meltdown, which saw most tech companies shed thousands of jobs. It is worth noting that another smartphone pioneer, Nokia, recently announced a series of significant job cuts as well.
In addition, RIM announced that CEO Don Morrison was about to retire after more than ten years with the company. Morrison’s successor does not appear to have been selected yet.
