Making life just a tad bit harder for the rest of the e-reader market, Amazon has just announced its latest Kindle, The Kindle Paperwhite. Kindle Paperwhite features a capacitive touch front-lit display with much better 1024x768 resolution, impressive battery life and more detailed fonts.
According to Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos, the new Paperwhite reader has a 25 percent more contrast than Pearl type screens used in the current Kindle and with 212ppi, it has a 62 percent higher resolution. In order to provide even and good light for some night reading, Paperwhite uses a patented light guide technology that directs light evenly across the screen . An impressive spec is the battery life which is said to last for eight weeks. The hardware buttons are gone so page flipping, which is 15 percent faster, is done solely via touchscreen.
The design is pretty much standard although the lack of hardware buttons and focus on touch has slimmed it down to 9.1mm. As noted, the fonts are much more detailed and it will apparently have a slider that tweaks the brightness.
The new Kindle Paperwhite is available for order as of today and should start shipping in the US on October 1st. The WiFi only model is set to cost US $119 while 3G one will sell for US $179.
