FBI claims Apple is helping Islamic State

The FBI claims that Apple is using technology which is helping Islamic State on its terror campaigns.

In a bizarre move, FBI assistant director of counter-terrorism warned US politicians that strong encryption technology allows terrorists "a free zone by which to recruit, radicalise, plot and plan."

Michael Steinbach claimed that Apple’s encryption technology was creating "dark spaces" that are aiding ISIS and other terrorist organisations.  After all everyone knows that ISIS has pots of money for Apple gear and slices off heads to Coldplay being streamed on iTunes.

Steinbach is calling for "legal remedies" that will allow law enforcement access to encrypted communications.  We guess he means crashing into Apple stores and shipping Apple executives off to Guantanamo Bay.

Chairman of the Committee Michael McCaul says this is a "tremendous threat to our homeland."  We assume he meant encryption.  Anyone who sees an Apple fanboy as a threat to his country has clearly never met one.

FBI director James Comey has previously slammed companies like Apple for using the tech, contending that they are aiding "bad guys" by doing so. And while Obama hasn't called for an outright ban, he wants to be able to track communications when possible. "When we have the ability to track [online communication] in a way that is legal, conforms with due process, rule of law, and presents oversight, then that's a capability we have to preserve," he said in January.

America does paranoia very well, and while we don’t think much of the Fruity cargo cult we seriously doubt whether it is helping Isis get ahead.  Having said that seeing Apple, which makes its products in China, finally closed down as an "un-American" terrorist threat  would be amusing.
