Gear 2 gives Apple a run for its money

Samsung has officially announced its new smartwatch which it has based on its own Tizen operating system.

The Gear 2 smartwatch comes in two versions, the standard and the Classic, and seems set to give the over-priced out-of-date Apple Watch a run for its money.

The Gear 2 watches have the same 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. They are powered by a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, 4 GB of memory, and 512 MB of RAM.

For sensors they have an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, and a barometer, and also support 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and NFC, but lacks one important, the built-in GPS.

The Gear S2 has a 3G version and a larger 300 mAh battery. As you would expect it is slightly thicker. The standard Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will have a 250 mAh battery. The difference between those two models is the size. The Classis is 39 mm, while the standard model is 42 mm.

Samsung has yet to announce any pricing yet, but with Tizen as its operating system it could be a lot cheaper for the South Korean outfit.
