Microsoft Thrilled, Apple Copies Surface

Microsoft happily jumps on the iPad Pro boat with updated Office.

After joining Apple on the stage last night as the tech-fashion-cult juggernaut unveiled its latest gadgets, Microsoft has announced updates to the Office for iPad (Pro). New features for the iWatch incoming as well.

On their dedicated Office blog, Microsoft outlined several new features coming to the Office for iPad. In line with its "Pro" moniker, to use most of the new features comfortably, or as a matter of fact at all, you will need the newest, largest, awesomest, iPad Pro.

This really is the new Microsoft. Satya Nadella has broken up with the past and is living up to his promise that Microsoft will be wherever people use anything resembling a computer. And it seems that he doesn't mind at all that Apple is ripping pages straight from Microsoft's book.

It must also be strangely reassuring (and infuriating at the same time?) for Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer to see how Apple is finally admitting what they were preaching the entire time. In order to be really productive on a computing device, you do need more than 9.5" inches of screen realestate and your fingers.

Well, Apple has finally launched Surface Pro 3. Errr, we mean the iPad Pro. 12.5", high resolution, "desktop class" processor and graphics, a keyboard you need to purchase separately and the Pencil. That you also need to purchase separately.

And Microsoft couldn't be happier than to update their good old and surprisingly powerful Office for the iPad. Guess what, you can scribble on your documents using the Pen(cil), you can view and use apps side by side. Multitasking in its limited Apple-esque glory.

Sorry, this is probably supposed to be an article about how great the new iPad is, in its productivity-oriented version. We just can't let go of the impression that the real winner here is Microsoft. Nice job M$*!

* we had to, for old times' sake ;)

Oh, lest we forget, Microsoft's apps for the iWatch are getting an update as well. Nothing major: improved calendar notifications, a more usable tweak to its Translator app and that's about it. It will be cool, though, to see 'muricans in Vienna fiddling with their iBabies to make them shout "Grüß Gott!" in their learning-incabable stead.
