The GPS technology in Apple's 3G iPhone has been banned in Egypt because the government claims it is a military technology.

Apple agreed to wipe the GPS function so it could sell the iPhone in the land of the pyramids. According to Ahmed Gabr, who runs a blog in Egypt, gadgetsarabia.com, the military was worried that by using a GPS unit you can get accurate coordinates of any place; and thus military bases and so on could be easily tagged.

The iPhone is really popular in Egypt, despite the fact it is so expensive that you can probably build at least three pyramids for the cost of a single phone.

It is believed that eventually the government will give up on the ban because as the economy slumps people will get more restless.  There is nothing worse than an uprising of discontented iPhone fanboys. They are not so much violent as just very, very annoying.
