Forgive me for the pun. Ennui – and we – watch things as they develop. It was an ex-AMDer, Rana Mainee - that said I could never produce a headline like this.

I'll stick to English in this opinion piece – even though I am a Scot.

My British colleague, Alan Burkitt-Gray - and he really knows his stuff - was interviewed on the BBC recently and spelled out the future of 5G without Huawei.

Huawei owns 30 percent of the intellectual property for 5G. 

I have just finished reading a book called The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan, subtitled “A New History of the World”.

It's a very ambitious book, but essentially the subtext is “follow the money”.

This extract, I think, says it all: “With labour cheaper deep in the interior [of China], many businesses have started to relocate to cities closer to the Dzungarian Gate... Hewlett-Packard has moved production from Shanghai to Chongqing in the south-west, where it produces 20 million laptops and 15 million printers per year... others, like the Ford Motor Company, have followed suit.” And then there's Taiwanese company Foxconn, which, Frankopan says, is building in Chengdu, rather than Shenzhen. Building Apple kit.

This cafuffle is all about trade wars, tech wars, and the “War of the Willies”.

Allow me to continue. In the last week we've seen coverage about Huawei being excluded from the worldwide community of technology. The latest letter is from big carriers here to the Prime Minister, Theresa May, asking her government to clarify its position on Huawei and 5G.

The UK government is, of course, paralysed, while 0.27 percent of the population – the Tory party members - have the ability to decide who the next PM is and whether we will, or will not, exit the European Union.

But of course it's nothing to do with 5G. It's the fierce tech war – or perhaps I should say wars – which are now engulfing countries as diverse as Taiwan, Germany, Mexico, Japan, Canada, India, South Korea, Vietnam, and the USA.

The big problem with this “war of the willies” is that it is seriously compromising the extremely complicated supply chains that support the semiconductor industry. And that of course compromise the software and networking industries too. Because, as I used to say, with hardware and software, you can't have one without the other.

I never thought nearly 40 years ago when I started writing about computers that I'd be writing in the 21st century about geopolitics.

But I am.

This is a fierce conflict that's imbued with utter stupidity. Excluding Huawei from the semiconductor industry is like trying to connect to your electricity supply without a plug. I am forced, against my will, to say that unless the computer industry tells the politicians exactly how this will impact cooperation and development, we may as well switch off the electricity, see if we can find some candles, and go back to carts and horses. And then develop Morse Code.
