According to the statement posted over at WeChat, the company has already stopped sending new Kindle devices to resellers and will end all Kindle-related operations as of June 30th, 2023.
This means that users in China will be able to download previously purchased e-books, but after June 30th next year, Kindle devices in China won't be able to access any content.
The FAQ that was published alongside the statement does not give out any reason for such a decision but Reuters managed to get a statement from an Amazon spokesperson stating that they "periodically evaluate our offerings and make adjustments, wherever we operate.”
Amazon did say that other businesses in China will continue to operate normally.
Amazon will also give a refund to those that have bought a Kindle device during 2022, if they send a device back by October 1st.
Amazon's move to pull its digital bookstore from China is not a big surprise if you know that there are plenty of strong e-book stores in China and with the pressure from China government, it is probably quite hard to compete with other players.
