Runs on Linux and Atom storage gear

Qnap Systems has announced a 2.5-inch drive variation for its Linux and Intel Atom-based family of network-attached storage (NAS) devices.

Dubbed the SS-439 Pro Turbo NAS only eats 18 Watts with all four drives installed and in sleep mode the drive uses only 15W. The gear is aimed at SMB and SOHO users and is similar to the TS-439 Pro Turbo announced in February, except with 2.5-inch drives.

When it runs on Linux it has a 1.6GHz Atom N270, matched with an Intel 945GSE + ICH7M chipset. It comes with 1GB of DDR2 memory, as well as a 128MB DOM.

The SS-439 Pro has four trays, each of which can hold up to 1.5GB capacity, for 6TB total of hot-swappable storage and is at the same time more compact than previous models. It measures 8.5 x 4.0 x 5.9-inches and has 2.5-inch drive support. No word on the pricing yet.
