However, you're stuffed if you haven't installed Android app support.
Vole isn't saying why it's binning support for the Windows Subsystem for Android, other than the following missive:
"Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games that need WSA will no longer be supported from 5 March, 2025. Until then, technical support will still be available to customers."
All this means that those thinking about using Android Apps on their Surface Pros were officially doomed from yesterday.
"Customers that have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5, 2024, will still have access to those apps until 5 March 5, 2025," Microsoft added
Amazon added that apps installed from the Amazon Appstore on your Windows 11 devices will keep working until 5 March.
"While we don't expect any immediate impact on your ability to use the apps between March 2024 and March 2025, over time, some apps may not work properly."
There were several reasons why Microsoft might have killed off Android apps on Windows.
- because they were not very good.
- There was a lack of proper access to the Google Play Store, which meant that users had to download apps from Amazon's app store which was not as handy.
- The Amazon store is still full of dodgy, pay-to-win games and apps.
- While there are still Windows tablets from Microsoft and Lenovo, there are no Windows tablets for lesser mortals
