The truck, dubbed TITAN, is the Army's first AI-powered vehicle and will use space, air, and land sensors to spot and blast enemy targets with deadly accuracy.
TITAN stands for Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node. This means the truck will be a mobile command centre for the soldiers, who will get feedback and tips from the system at every stage.
The project aims to bring together different software and hardware makers, such as Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, Worldwide Technology, and Palantir.
Palantir's boss, Alex Karp, told Bloomberg that TITAN was a follow-up to Maven, a dodgy project that used AI to spy on people and things from drones.
Karp said TITAN was a team effort between "people who've built software products that have been used on the battlefield and used commercially." He said: "That simple insight which you see in the battlefield in Ukraine, which you see in Israel, is hard for institutions to internalise. For the Pentagon, this step is one of the most historic steps ever because it says, 'We're going to fight for real, we're going to put the best on the battlefield, and the best is not just one company.' It's a team led by the world's most prominent software provider in defence: Palantir."
Palantir is named after a magic crystal ball from Lord of the Rings, which allowed the supreme force of evil to overwhelm the minds of lesser beings. It was also one of the firms that joined a new US group to support the safe use of generative AI, which can create fake images, videos, and texts.
