Samsung has pledged to deliver electric vehicle (EV) batteries capable of reaching 80 per cent charge in just nine minutes, with a lifespan of 20 years.

Set to commence production in 2026, the ultra-fast charging batteries are part of Samsung's cunning plans to revolutionise the EV market. By 2029, the company aims to produce long-lasting batteries that maintain performance over two decades.

In March, Samsung SDI gave a sneak peek of the technology, and this week at the 37th Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exposition (EVS37) in Seoul, it showcased an anode-free all-solid-state battery (ASB) boasting a remarkable 900-watt-hour per litre density. Mass production of this ASB is targeted for 2027.

Solid-state batteries represent a significant advancement over traditional lithium-ion batteries, offering higher energy density, quicker charging times, and increased safety. Samsung has proactively addressed safety concerns, implementing vents in its batteries to release heat and gas, and reduce the risk of thermal runaway in an accident or fire.

At EVS37, Samsung revealed new products like the 46-phi batteries and a cell-to-pack (CTP) concept that promises to enhance energy density while cutting costs. The company's battery unit is branding these innovations as "super-gap" technology, poised to lead the global EV market into the future.

As the race to improve battery performance heats up, Samsung has secured a portion of a nickel mine to ensure a steady supply of essential materials for battery production.

Competitors are not far behind, with Toyota, in partnership with Panasonic, ready to introduce solid-state batteries with a 745-mile range and a 10-minute charge time by 2025. China's CATL has also developed a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that can travel 250 miles after a mere ten-minute charge, boasting a full charge range of 435 miles.
