Market tracker IDC said the $3,000 Vision Pro mixed-reality headset has yet to sell 100,000 units in a quarter since its launch in the United States in February, and it faces a 75 per cent drop in domestic sales in the current quarter.
Apple hopes the gadget’s international launch at the end of June will offset weakness in the US, but IDC says that things will not get better for the product until a more affordable edition might rekindle interest in 2025. However, IDC said that Apple would have to make it for about half the price and in the meantime, the current version is going to sell like a dose of the clap.
IDC vice-president Francisco Jeronimo said: “The Vision Pro’s success, regardless of its price, will ultimately depend on the available content. As Apple expands the product to international markets, local content must be also made available.”
Of course, there is a problem with that. Why would developers create content for a product that no one will buy and be required to give a huge cut to Apple just for the pleasure of helping it out.
We called the Vision Pro as a disaster waiting to happen. Our own Apple sources told us it was not ready to leave the flying saucer, but Jobs’ Mob needed something as it lost its mojo after dropping the ball on AI.
As a result, it came out too heavy and had more external wires than were feasible. Rival gadgets had the advantage of being cheaper and, well, better.
