TSMC finally starts making Apple chips in the US

At least a small bag

TSMC has reportedly started producing some of the fruity cargo cult Apple's iPhone chips in its Arizona foundry.

The TSMC foundry in Arizona has been under construction for years, with planning dating back to 2020. After four years, the facility is operational and has started making test runs of chips for Jobs Mob.

Phase 1 of TSMC's Fab 21 in Arizona is making the A16 SoC of the iPhone 14 Pro in "small but significant" numbers. At this stage, the production is largely a test for the facility, but more production is expected in the coming months.

The volume will ramp up massively once the second stage of the Phase 1 fab concludes. If everything stays on schedule, the Arizona plant will hit “a production target” sometime in the first half of 2025.

The first to be made in America will be the A16, which will use the same N4P process in TSMC's Taiwan facilities. It is pretty low level by TSMC’s standards – more of a pimped up 5-nanometer process rather than a 4-nanometer production.

Sources say the Arizona plant is achieving yields behind Taiwan-based factories. Yield parity is expected to happen within months.
