Android smartphone users prefer iPads

Here is some rather depressing news for tablet vendors who don’t happen to have a chewed piece of fruit in their logo.

According to a recent report by Canaccord Genuity, it turns out that Android phone users are buying iPads rather than Android tablets such as Motorola’s Xoom or Samsung’s Tab series. Although Canaccord believes Samsung, Amazon and Asus pose a threat to Apple’s market dominance, strong iPad adoption is proving to be a serious hurdle for all Android tablets.

Analysts attribute the trend to Apple’s substantial lead in tablet apps, and once consumers are hooked they tend to stick to the same system, which is a source of concern for Android vendors. The fact that decent Android tablets cost nearly as much as iPads is not helping, either. Hence, Apple is expected to maintain a dominant 56 percent share in the tablet market this year and it is set to grab more than 50 percent next year.

In addition, analysts believe Windows 8 tablets could do well once they start shipping next year, particularly in the enterprise market.
