Intel working on Thunderbolt dock for ultrabooks

Coming next year, in second generation devices

Intel is said to be working on a clever ultrabook dock based on speedy Thunderbolt technology, but the new dock should only be ready for next year’s crop of ultrabooks.

According to VR Zone, the cunning plan is to integrate Thunderbolt and non-Thunderbolt connectors in a common housing and provide a dock connector as well. The combo-connector will allowing users to transform their ultrabooks into proper desktop replacements with a single cable and port replicators, but there are some obvious issues with this approach.

The large dock connector will be coupled with a mini DisplayPort connector, so it will be pretty bulky, especially when fitted on ultrathin ultrabooks. There is also the issue of power supply and LAN connectivity. All in all, it is a technologically advanced concept, but at the same time it seems pretty unwieldy if you ask us.

You can see for yourselves here.
