There was no official announcement though. Google’s Sundar Pichai apparently told Wall Street Journal reporter Amir Efrati that a new Nexus 10 is coming, and that it will be produced by Samsung, just like the first generation.
There is no word on specs just yet, although we have a rough idea of what to expect. The resolution will probably stay the same, since 2560x1600 is still more than good enough for any tablet. Besides, there are practically no higher resolution tablet panels and most SoCs would struggle with more pixels.
Speaking of SoCs, the original Nexus 10 featured a 32nm dual-core A15, courtesy of Samsung. The chip wasn’t too impressive as it experienced some thermal issues and had to throttle quite a bit. If the new Nexus ends up with a Samsung chip, we might be looking at a brand new big.LITTLE chip, something like the recently announced Exynos 5420. Then again, it might feature a Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4, but we’d put our money on an Exynos of some sort.
Now we know that Samsung will build the next Nexus 10, Asus is behind the second generation Nexus 7 and Motorola will churn out the Moto X. The only question is whether LG will build the next generation Nexus 4 and rumour has it that it will.
However, it should be noted that the Nexus 10 didn’t really work out for Google. The small and cheap Nexus 7 stole the show for a variety of reasons and even today there aren't that many Nexus 10 tablets in the wild. With a new high-res screen, the Nexus 7 2 is even more compelling which can only mean one thing – Google and Samsung will have to pull out all the stops and make the new Nexus 10 a lot more appealing.
