Microsoft gives RT a make over

Microsoft is about to upgrade Windows RT 8.1 and give its users a handful of new features.

However, among those features will not be the support for new universal Windows apps and generally it is a low key upgrade.

Microsoft has said that Windows RT devices will still be able to purchase, download and run apps from the Windows Store that are compatible with the older operating systems, but newer apps will unavailable.

It is pretty obvious that if Windows RT devices won't be upgraded to Windows 10, the new apps built for that particular platform will not work.

We already knew that the company won't be providing a Windows 10 update for ARM tablets and many had thought that Redmond was going to walk away from the ARM based OS completely.

Microsoft did not need Windows RT to remain in the tablet business, in fact it is somewhat of a liability.

RT only was important when ARM had total control of the tablet market and Microsoft and Intel didn't. Tablet sales have dropped and Intel can provide chips that will work for Redmond's surface tablets. There is little chance that RT will spin any serious money for Redmond.

Last quarter, Microsoft's Surface business alone brought in $888 million and the Microsoft added new features to Windows 10 that are designed to enhance the experience of using 2-in-1 devices that combine the experience of using a laptop and tablet. So why worry about RT?
