Same Apple A9X SoC, 4GB of RAM and True-Tone display

Apple has unveiled the new iPad Pro using the same SoC as the previously available 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but behind a smaller 9.7-inch 2048x1536 IPS True-Tone display.

Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad Pro is placed between the earlier available iPad Air 2 and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with the same Apple A9X Twister SoC and with PowerVR 12 Cluster Series 7XT GPU. Unfortunately, Apple is not telling anyone the precise clock speed or the amount of RAM. It is a good bet that these would be the same as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which was clocked at 2.26GHz and came with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

Despite having a smaller display, the new iPad has the same dimensions and weight as the iPad Air 2, 240x169.5x6.1mm and weighs 437g. The new iPad Pro has a  9.7-inch IPS panel with a 2048x1536 resolution and has same 264 ppi pixel density,  as the 12.9-inch 2732x2048 iPad Pro.

The biggest update is the new 9.7-inch True Tone display, which has 500 nits of brightness which is enough to make anyone's head scratch.  It has a wide colour gamut (DCI-P3) and  measures the ambient brightness and colour temperature and adjusts the display accordingly. The display is  fully laminated and comes with fingerprint-resistant and anti-reflective coating.

In the camera department there is a  rear 12-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front. This is a significant upgrade from 8MP/1.2MP on the old 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro can manage 4K video recording at 30fps and 1080p recording at 60fps. It still has the same connectivity option, Cat.4 LTE, GPS/GNSS, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 and, optional nano-SIM and the same four speakers and support for Apple Pencil.

It runs on the newly introduced Apple iOS 9.3, which will also be coming to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. It comes with a 27.5Wh battery, which is  weaker than the 38.5Wh on the 12.9-inch version.

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be available in Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold and 32GB, 128GB and 256GB for both WiFi-only and mobile-enabled versions.

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be available for pre-order from March 24 and will ship on March 31. The prices start at US $599 for the 32GB WiFi-only versions and climb up to US $1,029 for the 256GB WiFi + mobile version.
