Asus makes Macbook look fat

Design mantle has been passed on

With Apple sitting on its hands in the design and innovation stakes, it has been up to others to show the fruity cargo cult what it should be doing. Asus’s new ZenBook 3 does just that.

The laptop is thinner and lighter than the MacBook, but more powerful and has a slightly larger screen. The ZenBook 3 is a 12.5-inch computer that's 11.9mm thin, weighs 910g. The Apple MacBook has a 12-inch screen, is 0.52 inches tall at its thickest point, and weighs 2.03 pounds.

According to the press release Asus says its ZenBook 3 has an extremely slim bezel design, with an 82 per cent screen-to-body ratio. It has a backlit keyboard with a 19.8mm key pitch, comparable to most desktop keyboards.

Asus says it managed to make the ZenBook 3 this compact by using an extremely thin, 3mm fan, and an "aerospace-grade aluminum alloy" as material for the case.

What it stuffed inside is pretty cool too. It has an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, up to a 1TB SSD. Of course it is not cheap $1,999 for a top of the range model. You can also use a cheaper Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD for $999.

It comes in three colours pale blue, pink and grew – er Royal Blue, Rose Gold and Quartz Grey. It has a Harman Kardon branded quad-speaker, a fingerprint sensor. About the only thing missing is any serious ports. It has one USB Type-C port for charging and connectivity. Still you can’t have everything.
