PS4 gets Linux

by on10 March 2016

We bet Sony is unhappy

A hacking group fail0verflow has worked out a way of getting the Linux kernel-based operating system on the PS4.

Sony has always hated this idea claiming that Linux is installed on a PS4 is a brilliant piracy machine and every time someone installs it a puppy dies. However one of the really cool things you can do with a Linux hack is string a few PS4s together and build a cheap supercomputer.  This was done by some universities who managed to save a fortune doing it.

The hack fail0verflow team have come up with is based on a loophole in the PS4. A demo of the hack has been shown at the 32nd Chaos Communication Congress (32c3) event on December 30, 2015 and at the time the console was running Gentoo with Linux kernel 4.4, systemd 228 and the lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

Now, the group has released the tools and directions that anyone can use to run Linux on PS4.
