Just a few days before the official launch, scheduled for April 13th, the first Nvidia official performance numbers for the GeForce RTX 4070 have leaked online, showing it to be on par with the RTX 3080, at least with DLSS 3. It also appears that Nvidia will also launch an RTX 4070 Founders Edition (FE), which would make it the third FE graphics card in the RTX 40 series.

Leaked by Videocardz.com, we now have the first performance numbers for the upcoming Geforce RTX 4070 graphics card, and although these are coming from Nvidia, they can give a general idea about the performance. As expected, Nvidia is mostly talking about the performance with DLSS 3 and Optical Multi Frame Generation, something that is available only on RTX 40 series graphics cards. The same source also leaked the RTX 4070 Founders Edition, and while Nvidia did not make a Founders Edition for the RTX 4070 Ti, it appears that RTX 4070 will get it, which will put additional pressure on its add-in-card (AIC) partners, especially considering the $599 MSRP.

RTX 4070 is as fast as the $699 RTX 3080 but with DLSS 3

With the Geforce RTX 4070, Nvidia targets 1440p at 100 FPS performance with ray tracing and DLSS 3 enabled. This is quite a feat as at $599, this makes the RTX 4070 rather capable graphics card. In terms of performance comparison, at least the one coming from Nvidia, the RTX 4070 should offer the same performance as the RTX 3080 with DLSS 3 and Frame Generation enabled. It is also 1.2x faster than the RTX 3070 Ti, which launched at the same $599 MSRP, and 1.3x faster than the RTX 3070. With both DLSS 3 and Frame Generation enabled, the RTX 4070 is 1.4x, 1.7x, and 1.8x faster than those three graphics cards. The second slide reveals some performance numbers from various games, and compares the RTX 4070 against the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 2070 Super, showing a significant performance gain for the RTX 4070, especially in games that support Frame Generation.

According to previous rumors, the Geforce RTX 4070 should be around 15 percent slower compared to the RTX 4070 Ti, with an even greater gap on higher resolutions. Of course, you should

wait for reviews from usual suspects so we get a better idea about the actual performance without DLSS 3, or performance per buck and the performance per Watt, which are quite important.

RTX 4070 Founders Edition is coming

As noted, Nvidia is preparing the Geforce RTX 4070 Founders Edition, which is a big surprise considering it did not do the same version for the RTX 4070 Ti, giving more room to its AIC partners and their custom versions. As leaked earlier, the RTX 4070 Founders Edition is a dual-slot, dual-fan graphics card with a shorter PCB, and should be smaller than the RTX 4080 FE, and almost identical to the RTX 3070 FE. Nvidia is pushing hard with the PCIe 16-pin power connector, so the RTX 4070 will go with it, but some custom versions will also come with a standard 8-pin PCIe power connector, as the TDP is set at 200W. It has a single HDMI 2.1 and three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs.

As said earlier, Nvidia will push its RTX 4070 FE at $599 MSRP, putting a lot of pressure on its AIC partners, as custom versions will be more expensive. On the other hand, we have already seen a few versions from various Nvidia partners that could launch at MSRP or at least pretty close to it.

Another leaked slide also confirms that the RTX 4070 will indeed be available on April 13th with the price set at $599.
