Wants to turn your RAM into a speedy drive

AMD has launched an innovative application that aims to steal a block of your RAM and turn it into a lighting fast virtual hard drive.

Dubbed RAMDisk, the application was developed in cooperation with Dataram and a free version is available for download. Of course, the free version has some limitations. Drive size is limited to 4GB, or 6GB in case you use Radeon-branded memory modules. Enthusiasts with more money and RAM to spare can go for the $18.99 Xtreme version, which allows users to create 64GB drives.

Of course, RAMDisk can’t replace a proper SSD, as it is temporary storage and will go blank if you turn off your PC. However, that’s not the point. RAMDisk was conceived to speed things along and act as a fast cache drive.

Offering read speeds of up to 25600MB/s on DDR3-1600 memory, RAMDisk delivers superior performance to any SSD on the market and AMD claims it can significantly speed up launch times.

You can check out the full release notes and download RAMDisk here.
