Motorola is owned by Google and one can easily notice that just by looking at the new Motorola mobile phone website. Following the noise that the company made with Moto X that was a cool concept, but didn’t really translate into strong sales, Motorola announced another phone, that is definitely the most interesting phone we saw in years.
The Moto G rolled out last week with a mouth-watering price tag. It is a 4.5-inch 720p phone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 at 1.2GHz that comes with Android 4.3 and will be immediately updated to 4.4 following the US launch. The US version with KitKat launches in January and 8 GB version will sell for $179 unsubsidized.
In addition to 8 GB or 16GB ($199) storage options, Google offers two years of 50GB Google Drive access. The 2000 mAh battery should provide enough juice for a mainstream phone. It doesn’t have a 4G support but at this price, and the fact that most of Europe doesn’t have access to 4G on normal priced phone plans, it doesn’t make much of a difference.
Google’s stock Android 4.3 is shipping with the device with a promise of quick update to Android 4.4 Kit Kat in January. At €170 on German Amazon, £135 for 8GB and £159 for 16GB in Britain, this is probably the best mainstream phone in terms of value for money.
With this price in mind and what is packed inside, we believe that this device might sell as well as the 2012 Nexus 7 as both devices had great hardware and a modest price. The Moto G could be very disruptive indeed.
