While many see the handset market as saturated, Hsieh thinks there is still room to grow, and MediaTek is expecting that the market can increase about 10 per cent in 2016. That means that there is a big opportunity for MediaTek and the company expects to see revenues, shipments and market share grow steadily in 2016.
The company's executive expects that Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East will rise in 2016 driving MediaTek's performance.
CJ is aware that MediaTek needs to work hard on its profit margins. Qualcomm, Nvidia, Intel and a few others traditionally make a bit more per SoC than the Taiwan based MediaTek.
According to the Ching-Jiang Hsieh, the company’s president MediaTek's solutions for consumer electronics, optical storage and TV applications still yield high margins but the outlook on the headset business unit is less positive. The increased competition and the fact that Samsung, Huawei are making their own SoCs doesn’t help.
Overall it is expected that MediaTek will remain profitable in 2016 and there is a good chance that it might win even more interesting design wins with Helio X20 SoC. This SoC looks rather attractive for performance/ higher end phones.
Fudzilla will have a sit down with CJ Hsieh at CES 2016 and we hope to get a bit clearer update on the company’s plans to the year that is about to begin.
CJ has also indicated that the current duo of Chief Operating Officers COOs, Jeffrey Ju and Joe Chen are likely candidates for the next company president.
