Gemini PDA is one of the first to use the tech

Planet Computers today announces eSIM capability on the Gemini PDA – making it one of the first consumer electronics devices to incorporate the technology fully.

Gemini PDA will feature an embedded SIM (eSIM) chip, developed by German technology company Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) Mobile Security, alongside its physical micro-SIM slot.

The inclusion of eSIM allows users to run dual mobile operator accounts at once, without the need to continuously swap out SIM cards. By incorporating both physical and embedded SIM chips, the Gemini PDA enables users to have a permanent home subscription and multiple eSIM subscriptions for local telecoms operators when travelling.

The technology speeds up the process of switching carriers, as consumers will no longer need to wait for a physical SIM card to arrive. Gemini owners can use the eSIM as the designated SIM for voice calls, text messages and mobile internet access.

Having demonstrated eSIM functionality on the Gemini, the device is now available for mobile operators to test as part of upcoming eSIM trials.

Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel, CEO of Planet Computers, said: “The Gemini PDA is one of the first mobile devices to integrate eSIM technology in the world fully. In the next few years the technology will become widespread, and when combined with the flexibility it offers consumers, we are confident this will improve the experience of the Gemini user community.”

Bernd Müller, Head of the Connectivity & Devices Division at G+D Mobile Security, said: “Regarding commercial implementations for eSIM management, G+D Mobile Security has had a leading position on the global market from the outset. We are actively involved in many commercial projects worldwide and already manage several million eSIM profiles on mobile consumer devices. We believe that the number of mobile consumer devices with eSIM technology will increase considerably shortly and are very pleased to support Planet Computers in bringing their eSIM-enabled Gemini PDA to market.”

One of the most popular Indiegogo projects of 2017, the Gemini is a 4G and Wi-Fi mobile device with a full physical keyboard and runs on the Android and Linux operating systems (dual-boot). With a 5.99” screen, 5-megapixel camera and stereo speakers, it is the modern PDA for the 21st Century.

Available in a variety of different keyboard language layouts, the Gemini has raised more than $2.2 million in investment to date, with the first production units already shipped to backers.
