The biggest selling point of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, in addition to its down-to-earth price, is the 6.39-inch AMOLED screen with 2340x1080 resolution, slim bezels, small bottom chin, and no notch.
Measuring at 157.9x74.7x8.5mm and weighing in at 218g, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 uses an aluminum frame, ceramic back, and an unspecified version of Gorilla Glass protecting the screen.
As expected, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB, 8GB or 10GB of RAM, as well as 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, depending on the version. It lacks a microSD card slot and it does not come with a 3.5mm jack, which was probably a tradeoff to keep the overall design.
The rest of the specifications include a USB-C port for fast charging as well as support for 10W wireless charging, all the usual connectivity features, including 802.11ac dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band GPS, and the usual sensors like accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass. Unfortunately, Xiaomi opted for a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, which is a rather strange choice as Mi Mix smartphones were always geared up with the latest technology.
The smartphone runs on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, with Xiaomi's MIUI 10 on top of it. It has a 3,200mAh battery,
The two main cameras on the back are 12-megapixel shooters with primary one with 1.4µm pixel size and f/1.8 lens, and the secondary telephoto camera with 1.0µm pixel size and f/2.4 aperture. According to Xiaomi, the Mi Mix 3 main cameras scored an impressive 108 points on DxOMark, which is just slightly below the Huwaei P20 Pro and close to iPhone XS Max.
The front dual-camera setup is hidden on a magnetic mechanical slider, so you basically push the entire back up, or pull the front down, whatever you like to call it. It has 24-megapixel and 2-megapixel shooters, so selfies will be good.
According to Donovan Sung, Director of Product Management at Xiaomi Global, Xiaomi picked the sliding form factor in order to "create the ultimate full screen display smartphone without compromising on camera performance, including features like steady handheld night photography and 960fps slow-motion video".
Xiaomi also included a lot of AI features, including the all-new Night Mode, as well as AI scene recognition features.
The Mi Mix 3 will be available in Jade Green, Sapphire Blue, Onyx Black color options, starting at CNY 3,299 ($470/€420) for the 6GB/128GB version, CNY 3,599 ($510/€450) for the 8GB/128GB, and CNY 3,999 ($575/€500) for the 8GB/256GB version. There is also a special version called Forbidden City, which has a slightly different color, gold-plated statue, 10GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and a price of CNY 4,999 ($720/€630).
All should be up for pre-order and will ship in November, while the Forbidden City version will be available by the end of November.
The Mi Mix 3 5G version coming next year
Xiaomi also briefly mentioned a 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 but this one will arrive in Q1 2019. It could be based on a future Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, and it will surely come to Europe, while other markets are yet to be confirmed.
