Apple plays more dirty tricks on rivals

Discontinues services

Spotify has complained that the fruity cargo cult, Apple might have attempted to bypass European Digital Markets Act (DMA) by discontinuing functions that its rivals need for their services.

The company said that Jobs’ Mob switched off technology that allowed Spotify users to control the volume on their connected devices.

Previously, when streaming to connected devices via Spotify Connect on iOS, users could adjust the volume using the physical buttons on the side of their iPhone. Following the change, this functionality will no longer be available.

To address this issue, Spotify iOS users will now be directed to use the volume slider in the Spotify Connect menu to control the volume on connected devices.

Spotify notes that this change does not affect users controlling the volume on iOS Bluetooth or AirPlay sessions, nor does it impact Android users. It is specific to those listening via Spotify Connect on iOS.

Starting 3 September, Spotify iOS users worldwide will be required to use the new in-app volume slider.

Spotify claims that Apple’s decision to discontinue the technology could be seen as a breach of the DMA, specifically article 6(7), which states:

"The gatekeeper shall allow providers of services and providers of hardware, free of charge, effective interoperability with, and access for interoperability to, the same hardware and software features accessed or controlled via the operating system or virtual assistant listed in the designation decision under Article 3(9) as are available to services or hardware provided by the gatekeeper."

The regulation mandates that gatekeepers must allow business users and alternative service providers to effectively interoperate with the same operating system, hardware, or software features that the gatekeeper uses.

Spotify has requested that Apple introduce a similar solution for third-party developers akin to what is already offered to users of Apple HomePod or Apple TV devices. However, Apple informed Spotify that apps must integrate with HomePod to access the technology that controls iPhone volume.

Spotify points out that this means it cannot use the same technology that Apple Music does on iOS, a situation that differs from how companies like Google and Samsung manage access to similar technology.

Spotify also claims its Connect technology had already been degraded before being discontinued. The company noted that using the iPhone volume buttons often resulted in unstable experiences, such as volume spikes during sessions. The new interface is expected to provide more consistent volume control.
