According to a post over at VR-Zone.com, Intel's latest Gulftown Core i7 980 will hit retail/e-tail on the 26th of June. The new Core i7 980 will replace the current Core i7 970 and is merely a speed bump from the 3.2GHz to 3.33GHz.
As noted earlier, we are looking at a same Gulftown six core CPU with 12MB of cache that now has a 25x multplier and ticks at 3.33GHz instead of the 3.2GHz on the nearly year old Core i7 970. Of course, every sane enthusiast is waiting for the Sandy Bridge E and the new X79 chipset that is scheduled to launch sometime in Q4 2011.
The new Core i7 980 is expected to be priced at US $583 and should at least bring a decent price cut for other older models.
