Freescale has showcased its first quad-core processor, the i.MX6, based on four Cortex A9 cores. The i.MX6 series will also feature single and dual-core processors.
The chipmaker promises to be among the first companies to offer quad-core ARM processors, but still the i.MX6 won’t show up in actual products until 2012. The i.MX6 features a 64-bit memory bus and new graphics core capable of delivering dual-stream 1080p H.264 video decoding. It also features “console-style” 3D graphics with 200MT/s and a separate 2D engine for UI acceleration.
Freescale is working to make the processor compatible with all major operating systems, including Android, Linux and ARM-compatible Windows variants.
