AMD is planning to bring Trinity to ultra cheap Sempron and Athlon II socket FM2 parts. We already reported that Athlon II will get the Trinity treatment, but the decision to keep the low-end Sempron brand alive with new cores comes as a surprise, as it was rumoured that AMD will ditch Sempron branding altogether.

According to CPU World, new Athlon II parts will feature one or two Piledriver modules, which translates into two or four CPU cores. Dual-core parts will feature 1MB of L2 cache, while quad cores will pack 4MB. As far as we can tell, they have all the usual Trinity features, sans graphics of course.

Oddly enough, Semprons will also come in dual and quad flavours, so this is the first time we will see quad-core Semprons. Current generation Semprons are based on the antiquated Regor core and they fit socket AM3 boards. All Trinity Semprons will feature just 1MB of L2 cache, which means they should end up quite small and cheap. Memory support has also been limited to DDR3-1600.
