The guys over at Chipworks did a detailed inspection of the new A7 chipset that is behind Apple's latest iPhone 5S flagship and it looks like there is more to it than Apple revealed during its press conference.
As announced earlier, the new flagship iPhone 5S features the Apple A7 SoC that features 64-bit support and packs dual-core CPU, based on ARM's v8 64-bit cores, clocked at 1.3GHz. Apple calls these cores Cyclone and the chip is manufactured by Samsung using 28nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process.
The GPU side is even more interesting as it is the quad-core PowerVR (Series 6 - Rogue) G6430 that brings support for DirectX 10, OpenGL 3.0 and Open CL 1.x.
The rest of the specs include 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM that should work a bit better than the LPDDR2 in the previous iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C as well as Qualcomm modem chips.
As expected, Apple managed to be the first to use latest technology available on the market as currently there are no other smartphones that feature ARM's v8 cores, have 64-bit support or even use Imagination's highly scalable Series 6 PowerVR GPU.
