Octa-core A53 at 2.0GHz

MediaTek is planning to refresh its mid-range Cortex-A53 line-up with the MT6755, a new 2.0GHz part designed for high performance on a budget.

The chip is similar to the MT6752 and MT6753, but it has a couple of things going for it. Although it’s based on the same CPU cores, the new MediaTek MT6755 can hit 2.0GHz, while its predecessors maxed out at 1.7GHz and 1.5GHz.

Since even the “old” MT6752 delivers good performance and scores north of 40,000 in Antutu, as proven by our Mlais M52 review, the new part should end up even faster. However, there is no word on the choice of GPU. If MediaTek sticks to the same Mali-760MP2, there won’t be much room for improvement in the graphics department.

Another difference is LTE support. The new chip supports Cat 6, unlocking even higher data speeds and possibly working on more networks, boosting its appeal in western markets.

We still don’t have many details, but MediaTek’s roadmap, leaked by Chinese smartphone site Mobile Dad, suggests the chip should launch in early Q4 2015.
