Everyone wants its chips

MediaTek is to announce its third quarter results soon and the word on the street is that the outfit will do rather well.

The Economic Daily News (EDN) claims that MediaTek will report revenue growth of about 10 percent sequentially for the third quarter of 2016 buoyed by strong demand for its mid- and high-end mobile chips.

The positive report is a little embarrassing for MediaTek which has had to write to the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) saying it was not the source.

The report claimed that the supply of MediaTek's Helio P10 - dubbed MT6755 - chips will remain tight through September, due to strong demand from the company's China-based customers such as Oppo.

EDN said that brisk demand for 3G smartphones and feature phones will also buoy sales at MediaTek during the third quarter.

MediaTek saw its June revenues hit a monthly record for the third consecutive month. The company's revenues for the second quarter of 2016 reached US $2.27 billion, rising 29.7 percent on quarter.
