Intel has officially launched its new Xeon W-3500 and Xeon W-2500 series workstation processors based on Sapphire Rapids architecture, bringing more CPU cores, higher L3 cache, and higher frequency across the board.

“For nearly 20 years, the Intel architecture has been the workstation of choice for software developers, scientists, creatives and engineers – any improvement we make to the platform accelerates their ability to change the world. Today, we’re excited to roll out our latest workstation products, the Intel Xeon W-3500 and Intel Xeon W-2500 processors, to meet the demanding compute needs of professional innovators around the globe,” said Roger Chandler, Intel vice president and general manager, Enthusiast PC and Workstation Solutions, Client Computing Group.

The biggest difference between the new Xeon W-3500 and Xeon W-2500 series SKUs is in the memory controller and number of PCIe Gen 5 lanes, with the Xeon W-3500 coming with an 8-channel DDR5 memory controller and 112 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, while the Xeon W-2500 series featuring 4-channel DDR5 memory controller and 64 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. The Xeon W-2500 series also has fewer CPU cores but higher frequencies in general.

When it comes to actual SKUs, which you can check out below, the flagship offer is the Xeon W9-3595X, a 60-core/120-thread SKU with 112.5MB of L3 cache, working at 2.0GHz base and 4.8GHz Boost Max frequency, and coming with a 385W TDP. The Intel Xeon W-3500 series ranges from a 16-core/32-thread all the way up to the aforementioned 60-core/120-thread SKU with TDP from 290W to 385W.

The Xeon W-2500 series flagship is the Xeon W7-2595X, a 26-core/52-thread SKU working at based 2.8GHz clock with Boost Max frequency of 4.8GHz, packing 48.75MB of L3 cache and 250W TDP. The Xeon W-2500 series ranges from an 8-core/16-thread SKU to a 26-core/52-thread SKU and TDP ranging from 175W to 250W.

Intel was keen to note that the new Xeon W-3500 series will offer 10 percent higher multithread performance compared to the previous series, as well as bring several improvements including higher clock speeds, 3rd Generation Intel Deep Learning Boost, Integrated Intel Wi-Fi 6E, DDR5 XMP 3.0 RDIMM memory overclocking features, and Intel vPro Enterprise technologies.

The Xeon W-3500 and Xeon W-2500 workstation processors will be available for order beginning Aug. 28, 2024, from industry partners including HP, Dell and Lenovo, with system availability beginning in September. Various motherboard makers will also support new CPUs with new and existing W790 motherboards.
