Acer booming

Profits after loses

Taiwan's Acer is back from the dead after it saw quarter-on-quarter shipments growth that exceeded the PC industry average .

Chief executive Jason Chen said that the beleaguered computer maker, which eked out a net profit in the first quarter after three straight quarters of losses, has turned a corner and will remain "on track" in the third quarter. Acer has been making a killing on products such as the Chromebook, which has seen on-year sales more than double so far this year.

Acer will report its second-quarter earnings in the coming weeks, but it looks like they will be good. For the last two years the tech press has been bogusly claiming that Acer should have been flat out, making mobiles and that it had suffered because of a mythical death of the PC.

As it turned out the so-called mobile revolution was a parallel development and not connected to the downturn in the PC market. Instead, the death of the PC was caused by an economic downturn and the fact that PCs had not needed to be upgraded.
